The fifth graders at North Topsail Elementary live in Hampstead and Surf City,North Carolina. We live in a beach community located in a rural county. We do have a relatively large city 20 minutes to our south,Wilmington,NC. Our county produces soybean, turkey, pigs, cotton and other farm products. Students at our school have varied back grounds as our area has had tremendous growth over the last 20 years. We also have a military base 20 miles north of us and several of our students have active duty parents.
Living along a barrier island in North Carolina we are at risk for hurricanes every season. At times the nor’easters in the winter will do more damage to our beaches than the tropical storms of summer. Irene came by our coast and we lost one school day already. So many trees came down on the other side of the county that some schools did not have power. Most of my students only lost power for a short period of time, if they lost power at all.
We have mild winters and hot humid summers. This past winter was extremely cold and it snowed three times! This was quite the event around here where it usually snows only once every 10 years. I never knew snow could stick around so long, even after the temperatures are above freezing. We got crunchy snow too, that was cool.
I have set up a page for each contributor. This will be the page where students will be able to ask you questions and get updates about your area. Please introduce yourself, so that we know a little about you. Thank you so much for working with us.
I would like to have one post a month from each contributor. Just go to your page and click on the "Discussion" tab and start a discussion. Try for the middle of the month. You can post more than once a month. The wiki will let me know anytime a new post is made. Check back a day or two after you post and see what questions we have for you. All of you have busy schedules and I thank you again for helping my students.
